DESERT HISTORY

Private Residence
Caesarea, Israel

The free-form concrete structure follows the natural site, facing ancient Roman waterfront ruins. Curving facades are gently molded to the land, and wrapped into a rounded enclosure for living which reflects the nearby archeology.

The building provides a highly secure shelter within the traditions of the locale, yet retains a modern emphasis expressed on simple surfaces by the play of sunlight and shadow.

CHALLENGE An active family wishes to combine historic tradition and contemporary culture; creating a place for rest and recreation that would provide flowing interior space, physical security, and climatic fit.

SOLUTION A “desert mirage”, which blends archeology and modern abstraction. Plaster surfaces and native stone finishes are appropriate to the local traditions.
